Sandal Care Home in Wakefield: Creating Capable Environments Through Strive

At ivolve, we believe a home should tell the story of the people who live there. That’s why the ivolve Home Showcase 2025 was created – to give every home across the country the chance to celebrate creativity, connection, and what we call Capable Environments, a foundation of our Strive model of support.

At Sandal care home in Wakefield, colleagues and the people they support looked at their garden and saw something missing. It felt tired, plain – it didn’t reflect the vibrancy and warmth that fills the home. So together, they set out to change that.

The idea was beautifully simple. They collected worn tyres from the local community, rolled up their sleeves, and started to imagine what those tyres could become. With paintbrushes in hand, each person chose a colour and a flower that felt like “them” – from rugby-inspired orange, to blooms that carried special meaning.

Day by day, the tyres transformed into bright planters, gathered around a centrepiece wishing well. The result was more than decoration. It was identity, choice, and creativity, brought to life in a space everyone could share.

The project was guided by colleague Kirsty, whose encouragement and creativity helped bring everyone’s ideas together. From evening painting sessions to flower-shopping trips, she made sure every person had the chance to be involved at their own pace.

It wasn’t about rushing or ticking boxes. It was about building something together. Even those who usually prefer to stand back were gently encouraged, finding ways to take part that suited their confidence and strengths. That inclusivity is exactly what Strive is about – giving every person the opportunity to flourish in their own way.

For visitors, the first impression of Sandal is now a colourful, welcoming garden. But for the people who live there, it’s a daily reminder of what they can achieve, and how their choices shape the environment around them.

This project shows why Capable Environments are more than a theory. They create tangible outcomes: improved mood, higher engagement, and stronger connections. They remind people that their voice matters and their contribution counts.

In social care, the environment is never just a backdrop – it shapes outcomes. A tired, uninspiring space can feel limiting. But a Capable Environment, as defined in our Strive model, actively supports emotional wellbeing, engagement, and pride.

At Sandal, the new garden has already sparked changes. People who don’t usually join in with group activities picked up brushes and contributed. Conversations blossomed while colours dried. And when the flowers were finally planted, the sense of achievement was written on every face.

This is what Strive looks like in action – creating spaces that make participation easier, achievement possible, and joy more accessible.

For families searching for a home, or commissioners and social workers seeking the right setting for someone they support, Sandal’s home showcase demonstrates what makes us different. It’s not just about keeping people safe – though that’s essential. It’s about giving people the dignity of choice, the pride of participation, and an environment that reflects who they are.

Our Strive model of support is the ivolve way. It’s how we bring together skilled colleagues, person-centred thinking, and creativity to deliver outcomes that matter. Projects like Sandal’s garden up-cycle demonstrate Strive in action, proving that when people have the right environment, they don’t just live – they flourish.
