Empowering Lives as a Support Worker: My first month in adult specialist care

By a Support Worker from ivolve Care & Support

I recently started a new chapter in my professional life, becoming a Support Worker at ivolve. Having spent my previous years as a healthcare assistant, this change has been an eye-opening and fulfilling experience. In this blog post, I’ll share my thoughts and insights from my first month working in adult specialist care.

A Shift in Perspective:

My friends influenced my decision to become a Support Worker, by telling me all about the unique and rewarding aspects of this role. Having primarily worked as a healthcare assistant before, I quickly realised that being a Support Worker is an entirely different kettle of fish! I was determined to embrace the change, and eagerly welcomed the diverse range of responsibilities that were waiting for me.

Beyond Personal Care:

In my previous roles, my focus was primarily on providing personal care. However, as a Support Worker, my role expanded to include a much broader range of tasks. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals with learning disabilities and mental health challenges. Every day is different.

A Meaningful Encounter:

One memorable Sunday, I was tasked with taking one of the people we support to a nearby shop. This seemingly simple outing turned into a profound experience. As we walked, I took the opportunity to impart the importance of road safety. Before crossing the road, I ensured the person we support understood the significance of checking the traffic lights. Holding her hand, we navigated the crossing together. She expressed her gratitude for the guidance, and it was a reminder of the profound impact support workers can have on those they assist. Even seemingly small and simple tasks can make a difference to somebody’s life.

Transformation and Fulfillment:

Changing careers from a Healthcare Assistant to a Support Worker has been a transformative journey for me. Beyond the routine tasks, I’ve discovered a renewed sense of purpose and fulfilment in directly supporting people who face lots of challenges in their day to day lives. This journey has broadened my perspective, allowing me to contribute in more meaningful ways to the well-being of the people I support.

Looking Forward:

As I continue on this path, I am excited about the future opportunities for learning, empathy, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people I support. Every day brings a chance to grow, evolve, and contribute positively to adding to somebody’s life.

In just one month, my experience as a Support Worker at ivolve has been incredibly enriching. The challenges are met with enthusiasm, and the rewards are beyond measure. I look forward to the continued journey ahead, knowing that each day brings new possibilities to make a lasting impact on the lives of those entrusted to my care.
